Former Southwest Airlines CEO to Headline Brand Leadership Summit

Howard Putnam to Discuss Using a Brand to Build Success, Loyalty and Employee Engagement

“Building a Branding Culture” is the theme for this year’s Touchstone Energy Brand Leadership Summit, a pre-conference event at the Connect 2006 Conference in San Antonio. Keynote speaker Howard Putnam, former CEO of Southwest Airlines, will delve into the vision of Southwest Airlines' own branding culture, a philosophy  that has led to its unsurpassed success in the commercial airline industry. The Summit will set the foundation for learning at the Touchstone Energy breakout sessions during the Connect conference and will cover important brand initiatives, including advertising and communications resources, SitesAcrossAmerica.com, ACSI, and new energy efficiency deliverables. Attendees will hear how the wide array of Touchstone Energy programs and resources can help promote the cooperative difference with employees as well as with members. A “state of the brand” address will bring attendees up to speed on the latest Touchstone Energy news.

Attendees at the Connect 2006 Conference will hear from author Jackie Freiberg on how to excel with a  brand, how to use it to stand out from the pack, and how to leverage the Touchstone Energy brand to communicate the cooperative difference. Connect 2006, the premier event for co-op communicators, marketers, member service pros and brand managers, will be held May 16-19 in San Antonio, Texas, at the Marriot Rivercenter. She is co-author of NUTS! Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success, and GUTS! Companies That Blow The Doors Off Business As Usual. Freiberg will coach attendees on finding unique ways to differentiate their co-op based on service and value, as well as building the brand from the inside-out by engaging employees and creating a culture of passion and productivity.

Freiberg is just one of the many presenters and keynote speakers that will energize and educate attendees at this year's Connect Conference. More than 30 breakout sessions are planned throughout the three-day event. Six of those sessions will focus specifically on Touchstone Energy initiatives, including:

North Carolina Co-ops Support ‘Bright Ideas’ in the Classroom

North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives are helping teachers and students in their state in a big way. Since 1994, the Bright Ideas grant program has awarded more than $4.5 million in grant money to teachers throughout the state to help fund innovative learning projects at their schools. The grants have reached more than 800,000 students and supported 4,000 projects that may not otherwise have been funded.

Each of North Carolina’s 27 cooperatives administer the grant program in their service territories and evaluate Bright Ideas grant applications based on student involvement, innovative and creative teaching methods, clearly defined learning objectives, measurable results, and ongoing benefit to students. Teachers from grades K-12 are eligible to submit their projects for the grants, and an average of 2,000 applications are accepted statewide each year from teachers in a variety of disciplines including music, art, history, reading, science, career-planning and information technology. Grants are awarded in varying amounts of up to $2,000.

Recent grant recipients include a third-grade class that landscaped a yard and created a garden for a family receiving a Habitat for Humanity house. The grant was used to purchase paving bricks, vegetables, flowers and potting soil.

“We’ve been able to touch thousands of students and help fund so many worthwhile projects through this program,” says Suzanne Ward of North Carolina EMC. “It’s been a great way for us to emphasize our commitment to our communities—and our classrooms,” she added.

The successful program has attracted the attention of local media in many of the co-ops’ communities. The co-ops host a year-end awards luncheon for all of the winning teachers.
